Treasures in Focus: Decorated Papers
Treasures in Focus is a series of pocket guides to some of the British Library's greatest treasures.
Decorated Papers appear all around us; they feature in stationery, they line cabinets, wrap gifts, back
playing cards, form the endpapers in books, and adorn interiors in the form of wallpaper. The Olga Hirsch collection of decorated papers at the British Library has been described as one of the largest and most remarkable
collections of such items in the world.
This pocket-sized introduction illustrates a range of these exquisite papers from Europe and Japan, showing different decorating techniques such as woodblock printing, marbling, embossing and paste painting. The introductory text describes the different techniques as well as the significant industry that grew up around these papers in various European cities. The Treasures in Focus series is available exclusively through the British Library Shop.
