    Violin Decoration

Nine symphonies, five piano concertos, thirty-two piano sonatas, stacks of chamber music and plenty more besides. Beethoven’s output in nearly every musical genre was prolific – so it’s perhaps surprising that he wrote only the single concerto for one of the most popular instruments of his day: the violin.

Violin Concerto in D, which is now so accepted as one of the greats of the repertoire, was something of a slow burner. It was composed by Beethoven in just a few weeks in the winter of 1806, and it was premiered within days of its completion on 23 December.

Beethoven’s only two other works of note for the violin were his Romance in G Opus 40, and Romance in G Opus 50, completed a few years before this concerto.
