2020 Arts and Crafts Block Prints: William S. Rice Calendar
William Seltzer Rice (American, 1873–1963) was twenty-seven when he came to California in 1900 to teach art in the Stockton public schools. He travelled, sketched, and painted throughout the state and familiarised himself with its history, flora, and fauna. In 1910 he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, continuing his career in teaching and taking an active part in the Arts and Crafts movement. He favoured block printing as a means of bringing original art within reach of many people. Each colour print required several blocks, of either wood or linoleum, all of which he designed, carved, and printed himself. Rice’s elegant yet humble prints continue to be exhibited widely and are in many museum collections worldwide.
