    Letters to Katlià

Letters to Katłįà is the winning portfolio of the Michael Marks Environmental Poet of the Year prize 2022 – 2023.

The prize encourages poets to write about ‘the environment and the place of the human within it’, in ways that a broad readership—people who never usually read poetry as well as those who often do—might enjoy.

Letters to Katłįà is outstanding for its poise and understanding of the nuances of climate change. Although writing to an addressee in Canada, the poet is firmly rooted in the territory of their own garden where, over the course of several months, the consequences of storms and heatwaves unfold. This results in a sense of connection and companionship with people but also with even tiny creatures, spiders, sharing in what the poet endearingly refers to as ‘spiderwork’. There are heart-breaking moments in these letters but the portfolio is also riven with moments of wonder, and the hope that small scale actions and interventions can combine to create significant steps forward’.
