John Hardyng's history of England down to the mid-15th century was written primarily to demonstrate the English king's right to be overlord of Scotland, and three manuscripts of his work include a map. Here west is at the top and the River Forth, bridged at Stirling, all but cuts Scotland in two. The variety of walls and castles marking the towns is remarkable, but at Glasgow (top) and Dunfermline (centre) churches are drawn instead.
